Is the mother who stands in front of a fracking lorry because she doesn't want her children to die from drinking lethally contaminated water supplies an activist, or simply a mother seeking to educate others about the dangers of an industry driven by greed and a narrow-minded, fatalistic approach to energy?
Is the fisherman who stands alongside Greenpeace to stop monster ships - many of them longer than a football pitch, capable of fishing for months on end, and able to catch and process thousands of tonnes of sea life - pillaging our oceans an activist, or simply a fisherman seeking to educate others about treating our waters and ocean life with the respect they deserve?
It’s easy to think of these issues are far away problems that don't affect us directly, but we shouldn’t be complacent. We are complicit in the destruction of our planet, if we don't take a stand.
Today, because of the internet, we are closer to each other than ever before - and, because of social media, we have the tools to speak out on matters that are vital to our well-being and sense of community. In short, we have the ability to make a difference.
It is too easy to feel overwhelmed by the number of online petitions springing up - but they are springing up because they matter to many people, some of whom have their actual livelihoods and even their lives at stake. Whole communities can be ruined because of corporate greed, spurred on by incompetent governments and ineffective laws.
Petitions on Change.org, Avaaz.org and many other key sites give us back our power, and the opportunity to affect government and industry decisions, especially when our governments and industry have stopped listening to us, the very people who put THEM in power.
When thousands of us come together with one voice, they HAVE to listen. They have no choice because the new paradigm is here to stay.
We must be the change we want to see in the world. We must act today, for a better tomorrow.
What will you do today to make a difference?
